Many space missions and research are going on but the research on Mars is very important. Mars is said to be the Second Earth in our solar system. Huge possibilities of living are found on Mars. The days are not far away from going to Mars.

Mars is the next to planet earth and fourth planet from the sun. this planet is said to be the second smallest planet in our solar system. This planet is commonly called as “Red Planet”, and represented by the god of War of Roman. The planet is named Red Planet since Iron Oxide is found in large on the surface of Mars.

Mars is one of the terrestrial body that can be seen by naked eyes from earth. Mars has valleys, deserts, and polar ice caps of earth. This planet is first recorded by the Egyptian astronomers in 2nd B.C.

Facts about Mars

  • The Surface Temperature of Mars is -87 to -5oC.
  • The orbit period of Mars is 686.98 Earth days(1.88 Earth years)
  • Mars has two moons Phobos and Deimos.
  • The first person to locate the Mars with a telescope was Galileo.
  • The farthest distance of Mars from Earth is 401 million Km and the closest distance is 54.6 million Km.
  • The mass of Mars is 6.42 x 1023 Kg.
  • Sunlight takes 13 min to reach the Mars surface.
  • Earth has an axial tilt of 23.4 degrees and Mars has an axial tilt of 25.2 degrees.
  • Mars has a longer season than Earth, due to a long time taken to revolve the sun.
  • The atmosphere of Mars has different gases likewise 96% Carbon dioxide, argon of 1.93%, nitrogen of 1.89%, and some traces of oxygen and water.
  • Mars also has seasonal Changes similar to Earth’s because the axial tilt is similar.
  • Though we call Mars as Red Planet but the color of the surface is golden brown.
  • Researchers found the traces of water, river valley, lake-bed, and mineral on the surface.
  • The ice in the poles is formed due to the atmospheric carbon dioxide to dry ice.
  • When the ice exposed to the sun, it changes to a water-ice mixture.
  • Olympus Mons is one of the volcanic mountains on Mars which is three times the height of Mount Everest.

Moons

Mars has two moons named Phobos and Deimos moving around the god of war. Their diameter is about 25Km and 15Km respectively

It looks like a larger asteroid and it is believed that Mars gravity might pulled the asteroid.

Moon’s orbit is rapidly reducing due to the faster orbit of Mars. Phobos getting closer to the surface and may fall to the surface.

Habitable space

In the year 2018, NASA declared that curiosity rover had found organic compounds in sedimentary rocks of the Mars surface. This gave a positive sign of life on Mars.

In July, the same year NASA announced that rover discovered a subglacial lake on Mars, and said to be the first Stable water on the Planet. It was near the 1.5Km near the base of southern polar ice.

Mars appears to have a higher chance of life in the solar system.

Mars may be once a planet with oceans, rivers, and living conditions.
